THE DREAM HOUSE

Lena Bishop, her husband, and their three children had been living in a small rented house south of 121 in Lapoint. For Lena it was her first marriage. Her daughter, Maggie, at the time just 14, was the product of a previous relationship but not a marriage. (Brad was incorrect on this point.) She and Drew—he was not Native American, Maggie’s father, met when they were both working in a local variety store. She was nineteen going on 20 at the time, and a year or so out of high school. She had been telling herself she would continue on to college, but she knew, too, that it was just words. Drew had just turned 21. She had Maggie a little less than a year later, and less than a year after that, Drew was gone. It was an amicable parting, as there was little between them to hold on to.

She had known Wayne Bishop most of her life—they both grew up on the reservation and were practically neighbors—but could not recall ever having any sort of interest in him when it came to physical attraction or the idea of a relationship. First of all, he was a couple of years younger than her, and to be truthful, she really didn’t find him all that attractive. She couldn’t even explain adequately what it was that grew between them or how. Nevertheless, he was a good man and had a career, one that paid well and had some cache. They were married in 1998. She was at the time already pregnant with their son Aaron. Emma, the youngest, came along in 2004. Lena was a stay-at-home mom.

In late October of 2008, Wayne brought home news of a bank-owned house which a friend told him was about to come on the market, and that if they were interested, he had an in if they wanted to make an offer. In fact, he knew the price that would get it done, although the real estate handling the sale was going to start with a significantly higher asking price.

When Wayne told Lena what the get-it-done price was, she asked him as to the catch. It seemed low given what he told her about the place.

“I drove by to take a look on the way home. Other than being in the middle of no-place,” he said, “it’s gorgeous—at least from the outside.”

“There’s got to be a catch,” repeated Lena.

Wayne just shook his head. “From what Greg says, and this from his brother-in-law—he’s got some big position in the bank, the previous owner just up and left. Apparently there were financial issues.”

So together Lena and Wayne went that weekend to look at the house, walking about the property and peering through windows.

Liking what she saw, Lena asked, “Can we afford it?”

“If we can get it at the price Greg says, then yeah. It’ll be a little tight; but definitely doable.”

So they did it; the bought the house of their dreams.

They moved in the last week of December, and right after the Christmas holiday.
